When disaster hits, the local church has a powerful opportunity to serve with compassion, skill and excellence. This regional disaster relief training is designed to equip volunteers with the practical skills, certifications and readiness needed to safely and effectively respond when communities are in crisis.

Whether you’re new to disaster response or looking to deepen your readiness, this training will prepare you to serve alongside trusted disaster relief partners with confidence and care.

What you'll be trained in

You will receive hands-on training and certification in:

  • Rebuild Training: Learn how to prepare and install drywall in homes after the flood recovery and muck out stage. This is a vital stage in getting people back into their homes.
  • Safe Food Handling & Mass Feeding
: Learn how to safely prepare and serve meals at scale during disaster response.
  • Fire & Flood Recovery: Gain practical skills to assist families recovering from fire and water damage.
  • Chainsaw Basics: 
Learn proper chainsaw safety and operation.
This training is required in order to use a chainsaw on disaster relief deployments.

Certification and safety

By registering for this training:

  • You will undergo a background check – making you eligible to deploy at the next disaster. 
  • You will receive certification upon completion.
  • You will be eligible to serve on future disaster relief deployments with On Mission Network and partners.

Safety, stewardship and accountability are essential to effective disaster response—and this training ensures volunteers are prepared to serve well.

No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn and serve.

Spots are limited and all registrants must be 18 years or older. Register early to secure 1 of 200 slots available and save $35 on your registration fee. Early registration ends April 10th and the registration fee will increase to $100 per person. The cut-off date for all registrations April 12. Specialty Training Descriptions

Basic Chainsaw Training

Target audience: On Mission Network DR volunteers wanting chainsaw training to work with the DR Chainsaw ministry.

Basic skills on how to safely operate chainsaws while helping survivors after a disaster. Basic tree felling and bucking techniques will also be reviewed/introduced. This is a full-day course with classroom training followed by hands-on training with a chainsaw.

Students should come dressed for field operations — long pants, preferably long-sleeve work shirt, work shoes or boots (sandals, tennis shoes, canvas type shoes and sneakers are not permitted); no shorts.

Chainsaws and safety equipment will be provided. All attendees will receive a manual. Pre-registration online is required and all trainees must be 18+ years of age.

Flood & Fire Recovery Training

Target audience: On Mission Network DR volunteers interested in participating in the DR Flood & Fire Recovery ministry. 

This class equips credentialed volunteers on how to respond to survivors of floods and wildfires by using appropriate equipment and procedures to clean homes and/or remove debris. It covers work procedures, equipment operation, and personal safety issues volunteers may encounter on deployments. Pre-registration online is required and all trainees must be 18+ years of age.

Food Handling Training

Target audience: On Mission volunteers who want to work with an On Mission Network DR Feeding Unit.

Basic Food Handler Class provides instruction on safely handling, preparing and serving food per the national food code as well as the On Mission Network methods.  The class also gives an insight on what to expect on deployment from a feeding unit perspective. Registration online is required and all trainees must be 18+ years of age.

Rebuild Training

Target audience: On Mission Network DR volunteers interested leading teams in rebuilding homes after initial disaster relief.

Instruction in assisting and leading the construction project using volunteer (generally not DR trained) church groups whose goal is to assist families and churches rebuild their homes. Pre-registration online is required and all trainees must be 18+ years of age.
